How can I permanently lock the Minecraft chat settings to "Commands only"?
I do not want my son to talk to others, but im fine with him using the available commands. However, he can simply open the options and change the chat settings again very easily at any time.
Are there any client mods that will let me do this? I thought making the options.txt file read-only might work, but it didnt prevent changing of options at all.

There are mods that can do that, but all he has to do is force update to be able to chat again.
If the sole notion of online is the problem, then try blocking port 25565. (No expertise here, just putting it out there).

Online isnt an issue itself. We had an issue on Xbox live where he started talking to someone via messages. He's 10, and they claimed to be a 9yr old girl. Turned out to be a 30yr old named Jason. After that, we do not allow him to talk to others. However, its quite easy for him to turn chat on, and then when he hears me coming, quickly switch it back.
Which mod requires him to force update? At the very least he hasnt figured that one out yet.

If you install any mod, they can be removed VIA force-updating the MC client.
