Ever since I got Minecraft (which was sometime last year), I've not had any issues with lag. However, as of a few days ago, I'm getting so much lag when playing on single player, and when doing multiplayer (ghostcraft, minez, etc).
I've not downloaded anything new lately, haven't made any changes to my computer, nothing. Why would it suddenly start lagging like crazy?

Overtime, when you play Minecraft, the memory builds up on your PC. This is usually caused by going on servers for long periods of time and/or having a large/multiple singleplayer worlds. I suggest if you're lagging, try and delete any worlds that you're not using anymore.

Also, download this mod that is fairly simple to install, it gives you more options to fiddle with the mechanics to reduce lag: http://www.minecraft...-and-much-more/
I had made a new world recently, but deleted it. Didn't help anything. Is there anything else that can help? Trying that link seems like something advanced. I don't understand all the mechanics for it.
You're not playing the snapshot are you? It reportedly has a significant fps decrease.
Otherwise I would do things like make sure there is enough free space on your hard drive and defrag it. Look for processes that are running and consuming resources. Put exceptions in your antivirus and firewall for java in case some update is causing them to monitor java's activities and slow things down.
I closed Skype's process, which was taking a lot of memory. Other than that, Java and Opera (browser) use quite a bit of memory. I noted that Java is currently using 376, 400. The number does change to either 380, or anything higher, but then goes lower and keeps going in this loop.
To my knowledge, Java hasn't updated on my computer...I'm not sure why this sudden lag fest is occurring.
I fixed it by deleting my .minecraft file and re-installing Minecraft. To do this:
1. click the windows button and type %appdata% in the search bar. A file called Roaming will open.
2. Now go into you .minecraft file. move any resource packs or world save files you wish to keep onto your desktop.
3. Go back into your roaming file and delete the .minecraft file.
4. go into your minecraft launcher and run the version of minecraft you want to play. It will take a while for the game to reinstall, then close the game once it's done.
5. Move the resource packs and save files back into your .minecraft folder.

I tried it with terrible results. I gave my wife my glasses for a second, a creeper showed up and now my wife is pregnant.
Stupid 3D..

Any other ideas?

That should work.
If I've been helpful. Give an internet.
