I just upgraded to a desktop last month, and this is more powerful than my laptop, but after running minecraft for about 10 minutes, after running smooth, it lags to the point where i get about 1 frame every three seconds, then it freezes completely. The only solution is to completely exit minecraft, and reboot. but that just restarts the timer.
I tried reinstalling java, but that didn't help, and my drivers are all up to date, so i'm not sure what to do.
Also, my specs are
intel core i7-3770k CPU
16 gb of ram
and an nvidia Geforce GTX 660 ti 2gb graphics card.
It runs at an average of about 65 fps according to fraps, then just crashes.
I'm running it at the highest settings, but even if i put it to the lowest, and use the default texturepack, it still crashes after about ten minutes.
