For an adventure map I have a dispenser with a zombie spawn egg in it and 2 dispensers next to it giving it an iron helmet and an iron pickaxe, so that it's like an undead miner, but it won't accept my gear. How can I get mobs to grab gear from the ground?

Not every monster can pick up gear. I don't know the exact chances of one being able to pick up items, but it can be helped with the assistance of mods.
