I recently did have some lag issues with my world - I'm not sure if it was just this world or if it was Minecraft because I really only play on this one world, but it happened after I switched around some .jar files - but the lag issues seemed to go away when I did a complete clean install.
However, I was on my world doing some work around my main base area and it suddenly crashed.
When I re-loaded Minecraft, I re-spawned in solid stone (but with my inventory intact). I figured that maybe it had displaced me a few blocks or something so I just dug up until I reached the surface, but when I returned to the area, it appears that the entire chunk had been overwritten to its original state! Luckily I didn't lose anything too important but it still wiped away a decent amount of work and I'm definitely upset about it.
So now I'm a bit paranoid about playing in this world because I'm worried that something could be corrupt and I definitely don't want it to happen again.
I HAVE NO MODS INSTALLED.
Sorry if this was covered somewhere already, I did do a quick search and didn't find this specific problem, and it says it's a memory problem but I'm not sure why a memory problem would cause world corruption like that. :/

Type: Integrated Server (map_client.txt)
Is Modded: Probably not. Jar signature remains and both client + server brands are untouched.
The wiki says this was fixed in one of the snapshots. I'm still playing vanilla 1.4.7.
The reports about chunks being re-set is consistent with what happened to me...I'm just glad that my world doesn't appear to be corrupted at all. It still sucks that I lost everything in that chunk though.

It appears to be this bug:
