You only use the minecraft.jar for launching minecraft on Linux and Mac but when you do that that is a diffrent jar file from the one in the .minecraft folder.
Do you mean you are trying to access the .jar file for modding etc.? Because if you are then you need to convert it to a zip file first then open it, with something like Unarchiver application (which is for mac, I think).
Same thing happens to me, I have the winzip (which i know for a fact is supposed to work) and it won't let me select winzip to open it. Do I really have to buy win-whatever? I use the evaluated version right now.
