I just got Minecraft for pc. It runs and doesn't crash, but normal blocks like trees, dirt, and snow will not break. I can kill chickens, sheep, and cows with my bare hands or with tools from a bonus chest. Grass and flowers break fine. I have hit the same block on a tree for over 200 times both with bare hands and with axes from a bonus chest. The little blocks fly out to indicate that I am hitting it, but it never breaks and no wood is ever collected.
The only help I can find through the company website is to go to the IRC that crashes every time I ask a question or to come here. The Mojang website also said that they are a month behind in reading their emails. If nobody here knows what is wrong, can you at least tell me how to get some actual customer support? The website says that refunds would only be possible within 15 days, but they are just now getting to emails from January 11.

umm have you tried actually holding the mouse button down while punching a block. if u click it blocks wont break ever. hold it down and then blocks will break. only thing i can think of ive never had this problem before except when i first started playing just like you. dont click... press and hold. also make sure youre not in adventure mode try it on a survival mode game. in adventure mode not many blocks will break using just your fists. you can do this by making sure youre in survival mode by creating a new map allow cheats then type /gamemode survival.
*facepalm* Thanks for the quick response. Seems like that could be mentioned somewhere when you first log into the game. I've watched dozens of minecraft videos on youtube while waiting to get my new gaming computer and they all look like you just keep clicking. i didn't even see it in any of the tutorial stuff that i was reading tonight while waiting for all the repeated re-installs I was needlessly doing.
