You are not at risk when opening it, you are fine. It is a false positive.
The problem doesn't lie within Minecraft. Its a Java problem. Somewhere within the Java download was a virus. "the same kind of thing happened last month". What is happening is that who ever hacked the Java downloads linked the virus with minecraft. This way when you go to play minecraft it says that minecraft is the problem, not Java. This is what I've come up with by tracing where the file came from and when it was created. So its a Java thing. At least thats where the "virus" was downloaded from on my computer.

sigh.... I have said this like a zillion times.
Quantserve is infamous for viruses, just look it up with google ONCE and the FIRST page is full of people asking about how to get rid of the virus or something.
Although this is probably the last time I will say this because its finally being confirmed as a false positive.
I'm getting the same thing, Avast! keeps telling me that there is a URL problem.
Avast! Seems to freak out alot. It's like every little crumb on the floor seems to create world wide problems.
I wish mojang would fix it or avast or someone. All I wanna do is play minecraft in peace. Right now I'm just
on pause with minecraft until it's solved.

Although mojang may have made some bad decisions im pretty sure that in a game played by 9 million people if it was a threat to begin with it would have been removed a long time ago.

you seem to be confused/misinformed .
Its Tumblr itself which is showing the ad (a GIF) which Avast thinks is a virus. The minecraft news thing in the launcher is a Tumblr site.
Earlier in earlier topics people were talking about how other tumblr sites were doing the exact thing, although I didn't go on a tumblr site to test it for fear of the virus (And the fact that I have Adblock).
Avast! isn't being oversensitive... quantserve is a distributor of viruses, and Avast! has your back and is telling you that. It's just incorrect in this case because the little tracking pixel is for analytics. Otherwise, yes, quantserve is bad.
The thing is that pixel.quantserve.com is used for advertising purposes as said by HPhosts but this company has a lot of malicious advertising. Avast was one of the first antiviruses to discover that this site hosted some malware. What has probably happened was that the Minecraft tumblr website was getting ads from the quantserve website...
Also might be that you have a Java infection.
Well I hope I helped!

Retired StaffIncorrect. It has nothing to do with Java.
In the mean time, if you still think it's bad; use the browser version.

Annoying yes frightening no give it some time to be sorted out. (Then again nothing needs to be done really not like its a big deal.)

"Something profound usually goes here but I decided to place a
self-referential and self-aware quote that others probably used
instead."
