Instead of showing the updates to minecraft and what they hold, my minecraft launcher shows this stuff:

Changing your language from Russian to English should help...jk, I have no idea.

you need to reset/start clean with your minecraft, this happens commonly if you fail to install some mods. I could help you do this but it depends if its mac or windows(which I am supposing)

I'm using windows. I tried to re-download the launcher to see if that worked, and it didn't. I also tried running it after moving the .minecraft folder somewhere else.

Does minecraft still run okay? Is your windows install set to another language besides english? Are you running a paid version or cracked?

Minecraft works, the language is English, and i use the paid version.

All I can think is that you have a program or some kind of font stuff installed that is messing with that OR perhaps a security setting is blocking the proper display of that code.

It does happen occasionally when something about the HTTP connection to tumblr glitches and throws off the decoding of the stream, but if it happens every time I'd suspect that it's a problem with some web filter software /proxy on your PC, e.g. AVG LinkScanner, or some anti virus "Web protection " feature.

then as they said must be one of your Web protectioners. Norton and AVG is knowned as the worst for web protectiong (blocks wrong sites)
Can you try this for me, and post your results:
Start->Run-> %appdata%
in there go to .minecraft
look for your "Saves" and if you multiplay look for the multiplayer data file.
With those put them some where safe/locatable.
Get back to %appdata% and right click .minecraft then delete. it will ask if you want to put this in the recycle bin, press yes.
Reopen Minecraft (lauch icon) it will act normally, and it will redownload .minecraft
close minecraft when it is done. Get back to %appdata%, back to .minecraft and add that multiplayer data file and the saves-REMEMBER TO PUT THEM WHERE YOU FOUND THEM. more likely it will ask if you want to overwrite 'saves' and do that.
