Hi all,
So ive been playing Minecraft for a while, but more recently i get these tsunamis of lag that make the game unplayable until i either wait 30 minutes more or restart my computer after exiting the client.
things ive tried:
Optifine (tweaked many settings already but still open to any suggestions)
Deleting .minecraft
running javaw.exe on high priority
slamming head into desk
allocating more/less memory to Minecraft
Anyway this problem occurs very often and it isn't my PC specs because my laptop is slower than the computer I normally play on. I just want to enjoy Minecraft again... please help!
It seems we have the same problem, and we both have an NVIDIA GeForce 9100. I usually get ~140 fps normally playing and every ~20 minutes it'll spike down to around 10 fps for a good 5 minutes and go back to normal again. I've allocated extra RAM, deleted MC, optifine, everything. I think MC just might hate the 9100 this patch... I'm going to update drivers and see if that helps any.

good luck ive tried that and i keep getting the lags
Press f3 and a the next time it happens. If it clears itself, your computer is holding on to chunks it does not need to and is starting to swap to disk.

ive done that and sometimes it takes a few minutes and eventually goes back, but usually it never does.
I should also add that after the lag i exit my client and my computer has the same lag while browsing or running other programs.

You need more RAM on your system. Minecraft is starting to use virtual memory, and that's extremely slow. You can play on a shorter render distance, which will help.

Firstly, let's make sure my diagnosis is correct. The next time this happens, open task manager (ctr+alt+del, open task manager) and take a screen shot of the Performance tab (prt sc button, past it into paint, upload it here.) Then tell me how much RAM your system has (Control panel -> System -> Installed memory (RAM):).
From there, the easiest way to free up RAM is to close other programs that eat up RAM. Since MC IS that program, it's probably best to restart every so often. Firefox (Or Chrome or Opera or IE I'm sure) also takes up a lot of memory, especially if you've been watching YouTube.
A slightly more technical way is to use MSconfig to prevent some unneeded processes from starting up in the first place. I've only gt about 15% of mine going. You'll need a slightly more technical background to do this, but this link is a great way to look up the programs.

Yeah, RAM isn't the issue here. I'm able to run 2 or 3 games (including MC) with some lag, which means my RAM is more than sufficient. Just playing mc normally works for a while and then BAM, insane lag for ~5 minutes. Rinse and repeat. This only started happening since 1.4.6...

How would one go about adding more RAM?
