Recently, I have noticed that when placing, destroying, or using a block, a huge lag spike occurs. This greatly inhibits gameplay as you cannot interact with the environment without having 60 fps dropping down to 1 for about 2 seconds every time you place or destroy a block. Usually, building houses and mining are cakewalk, but ever since the lag spikes have started occuring, I cannot play minecraft. Anyways, I'm sorry for the paragraph, but I have a few points I would like to bring up.
The lag spikes only occur on servers for me
Singleplayer is perfectly fine
The server I play on is hosted on creeperhost.net, so maybe that is the problem
My computer is a laptop, toshiba, 2005
Has not had this problem until about a few days ago (1/24/13)
I recently downloaded Path of Exile on that computer, not sure if that is what's causing it.
Lag spikes occur on my other computer, so not entirely sure if Path of Exile is the problem.
Thank you.
P.S. I have googled the same situation and it appears to have affected many other players. But I have yet to find a solution, so I hope that either the Minecraftforum community can help me fix it or that the problem fixes itself with time.
Update: Weird thing is, it only happens in the one chunk I was building a house on.
I was spending so much time there that I just logged out everytime I tried to keep building it.
But one chunk over everything was dandy.
I think the issue may be caused by lighting issues as when I open up f3, the whole graph is green, it says unspecified, then like lightrender.something.
I used a lot of stairs in my house, including the roof and walls, and also glass panes.
After taking out all light sources the problem persisted.
Is it because of the excessive use of stairs? Just a bad chunk?
One more thing. The chunk was not laggy before I built the house there, so I don't suspect it being the chunk alone.T
Thank you.

If so, it's not you, it's them
