Some friends and I started a Minecraft server back in Sept 2010, right before the first Halloween update. Eventually, the owner of the server was bogged down in work and we stopped playing in Jan 2011.
I started my own server earlier this month. I installed Multiverse and would like our "Creative" world to be our old map. My friend sent me a copy of the map yesterday...
The problem is...
The world is in the old, old file format. You know, the one where there are a bunch of folders named 0, 1,1a, 1b, 1c, 1d, 1e, etc. I'd like to update that map to the current format and upload it to our server. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to make any progress.
Here's what I've tried...
1) McNostalgia - Apparently it's not working right now...? I've followed all of the steps to the "t," but it's not changing the version of Minecraft. (After I choose a version, I hit Enter, it downloads the patch, but then the screen immediately disappears and Minecraft is unaffected.)
2) Downloading old jar files manually - I found, downloaded, and downgraded to beta 1.3, which is when the Region file format was introduced. The only problem is, when I do that, I don't see the world. It's in there with the rest of my saves--and all of them show up--but this one doesn't.
3) MCEdit - I thought maybe it was corrupted; so I downloaded MCEdit to fix those chunks. But it said there are no chunks in the map. I'm guessing the map's too old for MCEdit to recognize.
4) Deleting "players" folder - Since it's a multiplayer map, the only difference between that and my old single player maps (that I can tell) is the "players" folder. So I deleted that and tried the above steps again. No luck.
So at this point, I just don't know what to do. I can upload the world on mediafire if anybody would like a crack at it. (As long as the "players" folder doesn't have personal information--like passwords--does it?)
But I could really use some help. PLEASE offer any sort of suggestion! I can't be the only person with this problem...
It's best not to jump too many versions at a time before upgrading the world. MCnostalgia should work for this purpose. If MCnostalgia runs okay but the world is still not recognized then you're either in too early (or even late) a build for the world or there is something wrong with the world files. MCedit used to be backward compatible, however that was removed to simplify development.

Anybody else have a suggestion or idea?

I tried it with terrible results. I gave my wife my glasses for a second, a creeper showed up and now my wife is pregnant.
Stupid 3D..
