I've just recently started playing Minecraft, at the suggestion of a friend who is running a (vanilla) server.
I have client 1.4.7
I'm running Windows 7 x64
The client occasionally freezes while I'm playing on the server, but does not appear to freeze while not connected to the server. The screen will completely freeze and will not close when I click the exit button. I have to use Task Manager to kill the java process in order to close the window.
The time duration varies, aboveground I can set render distance to 'far' and play for an hour before it freezes, but when I'm digging underground it freezes within minutes/seconds even with all of the setting set to none/minimum.
I've completely uninstalled and reinstalled Java. I currently have Java 7u11, 7u11(x64), 6u38, and 6u38(x64). I've tried just using 7u11 or just 7u11(x64) without Java 6, but the game still crashes.
When the game crashes it's usually taking up about 900 megs of ram, out of 16 gigs (over 10 available).
Sorry if this isn't helpful information, I'm new to trying to troubleshoot java games :-\
Okay, this time Minecraft actually reported a crash before freezing.
Minecraft has crashed!

garfield00550,
I appreciate the suggestion, and it was what I tried to fix the problem.
Ultimately, I had to reinstall Windows 7 and then install ATI Catalyst 13.1 to get Minecraft to run reliably.
