Hi gents, i just bought minecraft for the PC. ive been playing on xbox for a few months and loved it so i thought id try out the real MC. Two problems in my road though. 1: i have an ASUS Republic of Gamers Gaming computer, the people at best buy call it "THE BEAST" and it was the most expensive gaming laptop they had. I play every modern game like skyrim at max graphics, but minecraft lags... im sure this is some tech issue i have to fix. Also when i try to connect online, it just takes me to a window where it says "Scanning for LAN Worlds" forever. However i have no interest in playing LAN i was under the impression that i could just link up with random people all over the world with a large server list. Am i missing something? thanks in advance for any help, please dont flay me alive if i have done or asked something ignorant.
I'm not sure about the first thing, but for the automatic connections, you can't, you have to add a server by its IP (basically you have to search for people with servers and ask to join if it's private or they're recruiting) and then you can connect (if it's whitelisted, they have to add you to the whitelist first)
For real? why do they not implement a public server list and just give the host the option of making the game public/private? seems like that would provide a lot more playability.i tried putting my graphics to fast and my render to low and everything, still laggy, but my comp should be able to play MC at the highest graphics and run smoothly.

I would be guessing because pretty much all servers are privately owned, so that would be almost impossible
Well, no, have you played Neverwinter Nights? it had a public list of privately operated servers, some required a password(private) while others were open to the public. Many other world builder games have used this type of server system.

Because there are a little more servers here than on xbox.
there are servers EVERYWHERE.
Its impossible to list them since you will have a list of several thousands of servers, most of which you cant join because of mods or older versions.
Also, you need to put your renderdistance on normal if you dont have 64 bit java.
And, all servers of minecraft pc are owned by players, not hosted on the minecraft.net servers.
i have 64 bit java and the rendering doesn't help even on low. and i can see how a server list would be an issue with thousands of servers, but NWN had it set up in catagories, where people only saw servers that were on their same update level. Something like that would make it really simple to just log on and play with people. There were thousands of servers on NWN up, but with descriptions and sub catagories it was pretty easy to find what you were looking for. Just think it would be something easy for Mojang to stick in.
It is not really wished for by us, the community, i dont play on random servers, you pick one, play there a long time after whitelisting and leave if youre bored of it. The forum has taken on this role, and this is way more vieweble to use. But making such a system would take alot of time and effort to build, not to mention a huge cost in hosting, since minecraft.net doesnt host itsself (its only a website with some downloads)
go here for the forum section of pc servers.
If you want to instantly play, find one that says, [NO WHITELIST] in the title, or something simmilair.
Find the ip addres (ctrl + f to search for words) copy it and paste it in your serverlist by pressing add server in the multiplayer menu
i recomend this server for you atm, no whitelist, no mods etc.\
its pvp though
Okay guys i fixed my issue, i just needed to update a driver. Thanks for all the help.
@ratelslangen have you ever played neverwinter nights? the way their servers worked was perfect. the host could either host a map he created from within the game menu, or, if he wanted the server to be dedicated he could go into the files and make one with a little know how. Then it would give the host many options for the server, such as making it public/private. then NeverWinter Nights had a menu that was accessible from the game menu that displayed a list of all the servers being uploaded by private host from their own computers, subcatogorizing them by which patch of the game the server was on an the type of server (pvp,rp,team, story, etc) the servers also all had descriptions and many people would find a few that they liked and stick with them. isnt that the same system you have going on, minus the forums? i'd personally rather hop on worlds and test them out at will while seeing them described breifly as i choose while in game, rather then scouring forums looking for a good world to go and see if i like. but thats just my personal preference, does that sound like something minecraft could use? it honestly wouldnt cost much of anything once it was designed and implemented. they could easliy make a MC server list button in game.
