My son is asking me to install some mods. I'm trying to find the .minecraft directory and I can't seem to find it. I'm not even sure one's installed since most of the stuff seems server side, though he does play single player mode.
I'm not sure where I'm supposed to be looking but I can't seem to find a directory structure that will lead me to the folder where the minecraft files are installed (assuming they are installed and I don't need to do something specific to install them offline.)
First make sure you are able to see hidden files, you can do this by (If you can already see them, ignore this):
- Go to control panel
- Switch to classic view
- Go to folder options
- Under view tab, find "Hidden files and folders"
- Expand it if it already isn't and toggle "Show hidden files and folders".
Now, to find .minecraft:
- Go to My Computer
- Local Disk
- Document and Settings
- Click on the account name you are currently on to open that folder
- Application Data (Slightly transparent one, do not click on "AppData")
- Finally, the .minecraft folder should be in there.
Depending on the mod, you'll install it in the minecraft jar folder in the bin folder using a program (I recommend 7-zip), or many other modes will tell you to just simply move the downloaded folder to your "mods" folder. Just consult the mod's page for installing the mod from their.
Thanks for the advice. My son wants several mods, but I was trying to do it manually for the first one. I got TMI installed so he's happy for the time being. I work on the others in the future and will look into some of the installers and instance tools.
