looked at forum posts about this before i posted. Ok, I've tried force update minecraft, changing/drivers (though it's a new pc - 1 day old to be exact), deleting and reinstalling minecraft, deleting the .minecraft folder... but i keep getting the black screen - it says updating minecraft etc when i update/reinstall it and then a black screen - truly horrifying......

so i get the black screen here ...... again..... it all seems ok i guess to me, i.e. minecraft should work. Kinda freaked out as it's a new pc. The specs aren't amazing but i think minecraft should work - as i've said iv'e tried pretty much all suggestions from other forum posts and kinda feel stupid asking for help but i'd really like to get this prob resloved.

try downgrading your drivers to windows 7.

ahh you mean in the device manager - will try nowtried that but i don't have the option it seems - i.e. in windows 8 (kinda not liking windows 8) it is not selectable. Maybe because it's a new pc.

well, i dunno. Since i run a Linux architecture, my only suggestion is to search the interwebs.

oh i also just uninstalled the norton antivirus that came with the pc and started minecraft again but - still no happy mojang screen... only black ........
*sigh*

well, i reccomend putting Norton back on, because that should only be affecting multiplayer minecraft. Other than that i don't know whats going on. Minecraft is a little broken with Windows 8. I guess you'll have to wait until Mojang gives support for it.

UPDATE!!

Well, I went to the AMD website and upgraded the drivers. At the end of the installation i received a notification to enable java (ss something) on my browser. My guess is some aspect of java working with my graphics driver was disabled. I didn't re-install minecraft just logged in to check if it worked - i got the mojang screen and the startup screen - yay! So my issue seems to be resolved. I guess what i was doing wrong was trying to upgrade the driver in device management..... tsk tsk I should have known.
