Up until recently I could chat on various minecraft servers. It doesn't work now, and the suggested fix of "force update" has not helped. i would be grateful if anyone could help me with a fix.

You are still using the T-button to speak right? make sure that the button options haven't been changed.

or... your controls changed, go to options and see what button to press to type

if all else fails try typing / that usually brings up commands, you can backspace after that

yes this is all fine - just when I backspace and type my chat, then enter - the chat doesn't post and I get the message "cannot send chat message"

The T-button or the '/' both bring up the chat bar, I type my chat and then enter to post, and get the error message "cannot send chat message"

Thanks ghero890 that link answered and resolved my issue. Thanks to others who offered help also. If you are checking this thread with hope to finding resolution for the same issue, you may try to adjust a setting as follows:
#1 Go to options menu
#2 Click the chat settings button
#3 Click the chat tab until it displays "Shown"
that is essentially the info in the link posted by ghero890 above. Cheers.
