So I'm running minecraft on the very lowest settings and I have extremely frequent lag spikes that last minutes because minecraft is using 100% of my CPU. I realize that I don't have a very high end CPU but it just seems a little ridiculous to me. I've lowered all the settings to the lowest/fastest and optimized my computer for speed over quality.

I have a Pentium 4 2.4 GHz CPU, Nvidia GeForce 8400 GS, and 3.5 GB RAM.

Again, I know it's not high end but I still think I would be able to get more than 1-7 fps when i'm not having a lag spike.

How to I make minecraft use less CPU?

Don't do that. It's pointless on a 32bit machine anyway as you can only add a few 100 meg beyond the defaults.

Try switching Advanced Open GL to whatever setting you are not currently using and see if that runs better or worse.

No, most people do not need more memory than the default, and yes it does hurt more than help.

It's true that allocating more RAM likely won't help. In fact on an older system like this with likely minimal RAM it might be better to actually allocate less RAM to Java. What OS are you running on this machine? How much RAM does it have? I certainly agree that you should be getting better performance than 1-7 fps even with the older video card & processor. Are you sure that the game is actually running on the card and not an integrated GPU? That would certainly make the CPU work harder to handle the graphics side of things.

I personally have no experience with it, however it has helped a lot of people, so I would be remiss to not suggest you try Optifine if you haven't already.
