My son was constantly getting out of memory errors in Minecraft 1.45/1.46.
We have a new laptop that is running Windows 8 and we typically run Chrome. The machine is 64bit with 4 gig of ram and i5. Chrome on the other hand only runs 32bit from what I understand.
Originally, I installed the 64bit version of Java. Minecraft ran fine with plenty of mods. At some point afterwards, I deleted the 64 bit version and installed the 32bit version. I think it was because Java wasn't updating correctly and when you go to the Java site, it automatically gives you the 32bit version if you are in chrome and tells you to delete all older versions.
The out of memory errors started to appear at some time thereafter but I didn't make the connection.
Ultimately, the out of memory problems appear to have been caused by using the 32bit version of Java. Once I switched back to 64bit the problems stopped.
Thought I would put this out there since I didn't see it elsewhere.
