So my friends and I wanted to get back into minecraft recently, but I started to notice that I was lagging. I haven't played minecraft on this laptop in a while, but from what I remember, it ran perfectly fine. But now, I couldn't deal with the lag. Thought it was my friend's server, but I checked my fps and it was at 15-20. So the past few days, I've attempted to fix it myself. I guess I should post my computer specs:
Dell XPS17 (L702X)
Intel Core i7 -2620M CPU 2.70GHz
6 GB RAM
64 bit OS
Nvidia GT500m
So steps that I have already taken:
1. I deleted all files on my computer for minecraft and then reinstalled minecraft
2. Checked and updated my java
a. I have both 64 bit and 32 bit java on my system (32 is for chrome)
b. Minecraft is using the 64 bit version
3. Since I have the switchable graphics, I made sure that I had MC enabled in the nivida control panel.
4. I saw a post saying that you had to enable javaw.exe in the nvidia control panel as well, and I did that.
a. Realized that my minecraft was running java.exe (the 64 bit) and added that to my high performance processor as well.
5. One of my friends told me to allocate more memory to minecraft, so i did that as well. Went from 0.5 gigs to 2 gb.
All of these didn't work. I mean, my fps increased from 15-20 to 25-40, but my system should be running at better fps. My friend has a XPS 15 (same age) and his runs minecraft at 120 FPS. I am at my wits end trying to figure out this problem. If you need any other information, please ask. I just want to fix this so I can play minecraft without lag with my friends.
If you haven't used it in a while, you may have dust in places, overheating the laptop, or clogging things up. Have you taken the laptop apart, and cleaned it? Have you also checked for viruses/malware/spyware? Could be you downloaded something bad.

I meant I haven't played minecraft in a while. The laptop I use everyday and it is kept quite clean. Overheating is never really an issue unless I'm playing AC3. I check weekly for viruses and the like.

And yes, that did escalate quite quickly
Since you haven't played MC in a while you should try experimenting with your video settings. I didn't read anywhere in your post that you had changed the in-game settings. Try lowering render distance, performance and such to see if that has any effect. There is more "stuff" in the average viewing frame now that there used to be. I would do this while running a hardware monitoring tool to see if you are bottle necking somewhere. Something like the portable HWMonitor is small, easy on the system, and simple to use.

I played around with most of the settings. Putting everything on the lowest settings, give me around 40 FPS but it then drops back around to 25. It seems like it evens out at an even 25 FPS after a while. I think it has something to do with my graphics card, but I'm not sure what. I have the same exact settings as my friend (with the same laptop) and his runs perfectly. I make sure minecraft is the only thing running, but still the same issue. I run other games perfectly fine, it's just minecraft that gives me trouble lol.

Have you updated to any new GPU Drivers since the last time you played MC?
I've updated graphics drivers and had to revert due to their incompatibility with MC.

Not for a few months now. Since it's a dell laptop, they handle the driver updates for the nvidia graphics card. And they are hella slow about it.
I've tried the HWmonitor and nothing seems out of ordinary. I've closed all other applications, including chrome, steam, and anything else that didn't need to be running, but still no improvement. I have a feeling it's my graphics card because switching between the integrated and nvidia offers no change. But i have both minecraft and java running on the high performance processor. But like I said, my friend and I have the same graphics card/laptop and his runs minecraft at 120-150 FPS.

That escalated quickly.
I feel like you put the poor guy on trial.

remove 1 of those javas that can be causing you lag
