I decided to make another thread about this because, despite the other threads that I have seen describing this problem or something close to this problem, I have yet to see a solution to it. I have attached a screenshot of the full error message from EventViewer, but the general message is:
The NVIDIA OpenGL driver lost connection with the display
driver due to exceeding the Windows Time-Out limit and is unable to continue.
The application must close.
Some quick information about my PC.
OS: Windows 7 Professional SP1
CPU: Intel Core i7 920
GPU: EVGA nVidia GTX 560 Ti 1GB x2 in SLI
RAM: 6GB DDR3
Primary Drive: OCZ 64GB SSD
Secondary Drive: 1TB Western Digital Caviar Black (RAID 0)
Native Resolution: 5760x1080
The following remedies have been attempted with no success:
Added/Removed entry from registry to increase Tdr.
Updated/Clean Installed graphics drivers.
Updated/Clean Installed Java.
(From another forum suggesting this for Battlefield 3) Via nVidia Control Panel, set PhysX processor to CPU only.
Via nVidia Control Panel, set CUDA-GPUs to "None"
Via nVidia Control Panel, set Threaded Optimization to "Off"
Verified functional integrity of graphics card, as in all other games perform fine and temperatures stay stable.
The error occurs no matter what state the game is in:
Reduced game to lowest settings.
Maximized all settings.
Played game in default resolution.
Played game in single screen resolution. (1920x1080)
Played game in full native screen resolution. (5760x1080)
Disabled Surround, play game in single screen mode. (1920x1080)
Ran game from default directory (default %appdata%)
Ran game from modified %appdata% directory to run from RAIDed drive via batch file.
It may also help to note that this problem did not always occur. The game ran perfectly fine in the Minecraft version directly before the release of beacons (before 1.4.3?) .
tl;dr - has anyone else had luck fixing this problem or is it pretty much "wait for an update"
Same here. This has been happening since Dec 25th for me after the 1.4.6 update. This happened in the past as well a year or two ago (1.1.8 worked but one version around that time frame did not). I tried different video drivers, game settings and driver settings with no success. This only appears to happen when using nvidia Surround.

Sorry everyone! I had followed this thread for a long time and ended up assuming this thread had just been dead. However I do have some points that may be of use.
I am not inclined to believe that this problem is caused by nVidia Surround since my testing revealed the same problem whether or not Surround was enabled.
However, I did notice the problem only occurs when ANY web browser (tested with Chrome, Firefox, and IE) was open at the time of running Minecraft.
What fixed the problem for me was (as silly as it sounds) to run Minecraft and ONLY Minecraft. No browsers can be open in the background. Also, I took the extra step to slightly overclock the cards. The problem has not occurred since.
Hi, folks. Just passing this along, hope it helps with this problem. It appears to be a "feature" of the Nvidia driver. It seems to want to go into a power-save mode when there aren't a lot of calls to the GPU. It works OK for the most part, but can cause issues like this.
And I'm only digging up this thread because it came up near the top of a Google search for this error, so others will likely browse it too.
Taken from an Adobe site for AfterEffects, but the issue is still the same:
For anyone picking up this thread (it's probably too late for rrebeiz40 by now!) I have come across a simple but apparently very effective tip that has solved the 'OpenGL driver lost connection' issue for many people using various NVIDIA with various Adobe progs (incidentally a lot of these seem to crop up on Dell machines, especially Notebooks).
(It fixed my issue with Premiere Pro CS4 - GeForce GT 555M on Win 7 Ultimate 64-bit, Dell XPSL702X).
THIS FIX APPEARS TO WORK...found on an Adobe forum
"This issue led me to this fix: go to NVIDIA Control Panel --> Manage 3D Settings --> Global Settings, and switch "Power Management Mode" to "Prefer Maximum Performance" (the default "Adaptive" setting seemed to be the culprit). And that's it! The key here is changing the "Global" setting, as my individual programs were already set to "Prefer Maximum Performance." I can cause the error to reoccur by changing back to "Adaptive."

I've been having the same issue for a while now, this seems to be working so far..I'll be back inna day or two and report my findings.
I need to resurrect this Necro thread - I've been having this same problem, but on my desktop PC, which I'm guessing is why I do not have the power options showing up... for the life of me, I can't seem to find a way to enable the Nvidia power options, as well.
I've tried disabling SLI, as well, but that's no-go. Any ideas?

same issue on my i7 920/x58 system as well.
So are all of you using multiple monitors?

I tried it with terrible results. I gave my wife my glasses for a second, a creeper showed up and now my wife is pregnant.
Stupid 3D..

Nadda, got it again. Back to the drawing board.
