I just got a brand new laptop. It can run any other game perfectly, but I get below 20 fps when I have fancy graphics and smooth lighting on. I have Windows 8, and the computer has an Intel Core i3 processor.
Laptops often run games at less fps than desktops, but your specs look to be good. Don't know why your game runs slow. I suggest installing a mod called optifine. It generally raises fps from 5 tp 20 fps and you get a lot more video settings.
Hope this helps.
I already tried that out, but it did not help anything for me. I guess minecraft just isn't meant for laptops :/
Well for one, your laptop isn't too powerful. Second, your graphics (not so much a separate card) sucks. Intel HD Graphics can't run Minecraft smoothly.

Do you know any good graphics cards that wouldn't cost too much?
Well there's your problem. Intel HD 3000 is terrible. I really hope you didnt pay too much for that laptop.
Seriously, do you just spam all the threads by dissing Intel HD graphics? That's not much help. They may not be as top-end as your self-built, liquid cooled, plutonium-powered Cray T-1000, but they work fine for a lot of people.
Consider downloading OptiFine and play with the settings. You should eventually find the sweet spot that will run the game fine.
But a Core i3 is NOT a powerful laptop; the i3 is the low end of the processor spectrum. Still, play with Optifine... you'll figure it out.
Really hasn't been a year before Windows 8 had their official release. You should wait a year or so before you get Windows 8, and Intel Core i3 isn't really that powerful, but it's powerful enough to run Minecraft (I have Intel Core i3, and it runs Minecraft okay). Also, those video settings do increase lag.

I believed one core to be low end? also I'm actually using a laptop with two cores for playing minecraft. not so sure about all the other specs though..
turn it on "max FPS" instead of fancy and turn smoth lighting off.
Also a personal recomendation: get rid of windows 8 and replace it with win7 instead (no, not going to give a reason for why I think that.)

Yep, why do people think laptops can be great anyway? Desktops are much more customisable and cheaper to build a REALLY good one. Not even hard. I'd say you're looking at a bad machine.

And tell us how you can carry them on airplanes, and throw in your backpack.
Anyway, ignore the modders. Their answer for everything it to tell you to spend money and 100 hours of your life to build a computer to run a $19 game.
I will say this, though. Unfortunately, those saying that Windows 8 is a problem are correct, as much as I hate telling someone to change their system. It's just too new, and too many folks are having problems with drivers, which is normal whenever a new version of an MS OS comes out. It takes time for the drivers to catch up. There are many, many reports of Windows 8 problems especially with graphics drivers.
You may want to consider a dual boot system including Win 7. But that's a real headache, too, if you are not technically savvy, and it runs against what I first said.
If you take 100 hours to build a computer you're doing something HORRIBLY WRONG. It shouldn't take up more than 3. Maybe 4 if you run into some problems.
Building a pc over buying a prebuilt saves a lot of money, which makes up for the few hours of work put into it. Plus it is fun and educational. (And you don't get the bloatware prebuilts get)
Secondly, dual boot systems are easy to set up. Just pop in the disc for OS 2 and put it onto a separate partition. Easy.
But yes, Optifine is good for extra performance, but it can only do so much to 'save' your system from inevitably becoming outdated.
So making sure "OS 2" supports dual-boot (or more) is not important..
the Computer boots from a dedicated boot-sector (correct me if I'm wrong) and there's no way for the BIOS to know that there are multiple operative systems on the computer at the same time, for dual-boot to work the OS to be installed last have to support dual-booting.

The previous post was talking about having Windows 8 and 7 installed (If i read it correctly) so that shouldn't be an issue.
Having a triple-boot myself with Windows XP, Ubuntu and Windows 7, I can safely say that it is incredibly easy.
I will quote you "Secondly, dual boot systems are easy to set up. Just pop in the disc for OS 2 and put it onto a separate partition. Easy."
My statement still stands..
the OS installed last have to support multi-booting.

My desktop runs minecraft perfectly on max settings, and I want to do the same on my laptop.

You can't necessarily replace a graphics card on a laptop.
