I run an old Nvidia Geforce FX5500 card (yes I know it was crap right out of the box)
So my first issue was getting the standard OpenGL error and so I upgraded java, my drivers, and reinstalled Directx.
Now minecraft boots up and allows me to log in, but then the whackyness starts...
I get a black screen (no Mojang graphic) and then when it gets to the menu screen the minecraft logo, the changing blurb, and all the button texts are multicolored unreadable (see photo)
I did multiple full reinstalls of minecraft (making sure to delete the old folders in appdata, I also have tried turning off all directx acceleration. I have reset my drivers to default and have also tried setting it so that everything is Application controlled. (all these things are fixes i found but none seem to relate to this graphics issue)
Oddly it did work briefly one time and during the game all the 3d graphics were good but the inventory gui still had funky dots and looked like the original problem.
The last thing I will try is to disable my nvidia card and try the original onboard graphics card but I doubt it could keep up with minecraft (Intel(R) 82845G/GL/GE/PE/GV/ Graphics)
Any Ideas?

hm... Well your comuter is pretty old, so the solutions start to narrow down and become harder to find.
Well let's start off simple: Can you conduct a Advanced Minecraft Error Report for me, and then post the ressult here in a spoiler?
Put all the junk in the trunk herrrr
gives me "unknown" for
manufacturer
product name
family
version
tells me my processor and physical memory and widows version (xp sr3 32bit)
But when it gets to video controller info it does nothing....
No other info appears after that
I download the advanced error test that the link leads to http://www.minecraft...aft-error-test/
ran it both from the desk top and the minecraft bin folder
gives me "unknown" for
manufacturer
product name
family
version
tells me my processor and physical memory and widows version (xp sr3 32bit)
But when it gets to video controller info it does nothing....
No other info appears after that
???
Strange... I'm really clueless then, i'm not sure where to go in this situation.
The monitor is old, but that might not be the problem. Open your browser and see if it comes out clearly. If it doesn't, it's your monitor. If it's just Minecraft, then it's probably your video card drivers or something, or it could be something else that I don't know. But something like this happened to me, but everything was discolored, and that was because the video card driver got semi-unplugged or something.
the monitor is fine and all my other games work just fine... it is a real mystery
I am looking for another set of drivers to see if maybe that will fix it.

I believe the problem was to do with your video card drivers, you may upgrade it.
