I didn't know where to pot this, and it's something I need answered before I buy. I couldn't put it in Q+A. What I want to ask is whether Minecraft will run in Linux, specifically Xubuntu 12.04. Somebody please tell me.

Also, you can use demo mode to make sure it runs on your system before you purchase it.

Demo Mode doesn't even appear. Is that bad? I intend to run it outside of my browser. Should I try a different browser, or give up? BTW, I am using Firefox.

If you log in using a non premium account, it should give you the option to play a demo mode.
