Since I couldn't connect to minecraft.net, I figured I would just delete minecraft and reinstall it. I tried deleting the folders and logging in, but still got the same message. I decided to just delete everything (didnt have any important saves so it wasn't that big of a deal) and download it from the site itself.
I did that, and got a message that minecraft wasn't download. I went to .minecraft folder and found literally nothing in there. I tried to download it a couple of more times and still got the same result, so what exactly is the reason behind this?
the files you need are downloaded when you login, but due to the login servers not working the client can't download the files
this is done so that only people who have paid can get the files
