This is what my friend told me, I haven't seen it. I'm trying to help a friend. I'm not on the latest version, myself, I can't get in to specifics because I don't know much about it.

Well, it's hard for us to give a specific solution, but here are the possibles.
1. Mushrooms breaks when a block is updated next to them, and they are in bright light.
2. The water must be tilled and soaked.
3. Sugarcane cant grow in water, and water has to be perpendicular to the block it's growing on, in order to grow(or be planted)
4. Plants need a specific light level in order to be planted. They'll pop out of the ground otherwise (unsure)
5. Reinstall Minecraft.
6. Post it as a bug.
In the latest version, when you plant seeds next to each other they break...
