While I was playing on my world, which was in creative mode I disided to go into the nether to unlock an acheivement, "We need to go deeper". I made the portal directly by my base. By the time I returned through the portal my entire redstone world has dissappeared! I know that I slept in a bed back at base so I took out my compass thinking that I must have just spawned in a different part of the world because of a glitch. After following my compass for a while the compass turned in the other direction abrubtly, which means that I just passed my spawn point, which should be right on top of my bed at base right? No, the only thing that was there was a huge ocean biome with blocky looking chunks of land everywere I look. Anyone know what happened?
Could it be because my world was created in the update before the latest?
If you have an idea what caused this glitch please respond.
I have worked on many creations in that world and it severely upsets me that there are glitches this awful in the game.

Well, it sounds like the seed changed, so the world generator overwrote it with new chunks using the 1.4.5 terrain generator.
Unfortunatley, try flying around the portal, and seeing if you can find anything. The loss of a world really sucks.
The compass does not lead back to your bed respawn point. It always points to your ORIGINAL spawn point when you started the world. I would get a world mapping program and look at your world to see if you can spot your base on it.
Likely you were only a few hundred blocks away when you came back from the nether. You see when you first travel to the nether the game creates a portal as closely as it can to the relative coordinates of your overworld portal. However sometimes a huge lava sea or large amount of obstructing netherrack makes the game locate the nether side portal quite a ways from where it should be. Due to each block in the nether equaling 8 blocks in the overworld, if it moves more than 16 blocks then it will no longer be within the 128 block range they need to connect to each other. So your return trip will cause a new overworld portal to be generated.

I tried it with terrible results. I gave my wife my glasses for a second, a creeper showed up and now my wife is pregnant.
Stupid 3D..
