I have been playing minecraft for the last week on a friend's account to see if I liked the game. I decided I wanted to purchase it, and did so today.
Instantly, it stopped working for me. I cannot log into minecraft with my new e-mail/username, and I can no longer log in with that of my friend.
I simply get the message on the launcher, 'can't connect to minecraft.net.' I had been logged in a playing literally ten minutes beforehand.
My friend tested by mine and his accounts from his location and they log in fine.
This has angered me very much because I have JUST purchased this game and it looks like I can't use it.
I have tried re-downloading the launcher several times. I have not changed any firewall settings. Literally nothing changed other than me buying the game and attempting to log in with my new account.
I would really appreciate some support because I am very, VERY frustrated.

Try disabling your firewall completely momentarily, and seeing if it allows you to connect. A rule might have been changed in the firewall settings. What firewall do you use? Does your router have a on board firewall?
I have the exact same problem although he (my younger son) was playing the game much longer then a week on my older son's login. I hadn't realized until today so I made sure we bought the game.
I thought of disabling my firewall which didn't help.. Could it be our IP? I have sattelite internet service, I'm not sure if that's a difference in broadband via IP. I've unplugged my router to try to get a new IP and no luck. Any suggestions?
Hey Jcupp72 - who is your provider? I am also on Satellite. Reason I ask is because I have been playing fine until yesterday. On Tuesday I was good until I got disconnected, since then I have not been able to log into minecraft at all. 2 different computers / 2 different accounts. I just get - cannot connect to minecraft.net

jccamp95 and jccup72, who are your providers? I didn't think to ask that.
I am in Canada so I use Xplornet. I just upgraded to their new 4g service monday afternoon. Minecraft worked fine on monday night and tuesday, until we got disconnected tuesday night. After that its been a no go.

A New 4G Satellite for Canada!
On July 5th, 2012, our newest 4G broadband satellite - EchoStar XVII - was launched from French Guiana. The satellite is now in a geosynchronous orbit 35,888 kilometers above sea-level, high enough to get a clear view of the vast Canadian territory it will be covering.
I see... I can't find anything on their website about service being down, maybe call customer service?
Do you have a router or anything? try restarting it.
I'm also going to direct you to this, this tutorial might help.
Thanks for trying to help out. When we woke up this morning I asked my son to try to log in. Not only could he log in to the game under his login it also updated. Nothing changed on our end except time. We have HughesNet Gen 4 for our sattelite provider. I reset everything on my router twice yesterday using Digital Life Now. Maybe it was something in my temporary files?
