I'm under the impression that Nether Portals are supposed to work in creative mode. I'm playing on single player creative mode. I've made nether portals before. I've checked the dimensions over and over again and they look like this:

In this diagram, X is air while O is obsidian. But every time I try to light the portal, nothing happens. I've tried lava on the bottom two blocks, I've tried flint and steel. I can't even set anything on fire with the flint and steel, but lava works. I haven't modified my game client and I'm at my wits end trying to open the nether. Does anyone have any suggestions or is this a bug that I need to report?

I tried it with terrible results. I gave my wife my glasses for a second, a creeper showed up and now my wife is pregnant.
