Did it have sound before? Mess around with the sound settings. I sometimes get the problem, playing for about 2 minutes sometimes helps.

Let’s play good guys against bad guys… Yes. Let’s play that. Are you ready? You’re the bad guy. And when you’re bad, you just run. That’s fine right? Well… Shall we play?

This happens to me alot. There won't be any sound for the first few minutes of playing and then it will suddenly start to work. I've never been bothered enough to look into it, though.
When this first happened to me I clutched my chest thinking my Minecraft was broken for the first time ever. As posted above, I restarted Minecraft and about blew my ear drums out. I had sound settings all the way up from before.

I've got a feeling either the game lets you play before everything is loaded or it's so busy with something in the background that it doesn't have the spare time to play sounds right away. Either way, we're probably looking at longer loading times if they fixed it so I'm good where we are!

"Sometimes, I just wanna give up, say 'I'm done with this mess' and go to bed. But you know what; you can't shrug off your responsibilities. You got to pull yourself up and meet the challenges head on. That's the only way you're gonna get ahead in life."
I currently don't know what causes it, but I DO have a fix. Restarting Minecraft often works. If you don't get sound, restart it again. Sometimes, Minecraft will just start without sound.

I have the same problem and I am running 1.7.10. I have tried EVERYTHING everyone has suggested, but nothing is working. Does ANYONE know what is going on? My friend has the same problem and it has been going on for weeks now. Is is something with Mojang? or with my computer?
I'm with you on this one professorSlime, I don't think the sound file is being downloaded correctly for me, the structure of the .minecraft folder changes so often though that I don't know exactly which files are missing/packaged differently. I've deleted and reinstalled minecraft numerous times and restarted numerous times to no avail.
My minecraft sound wasn't working then I whent to check if I had any resource packs on (had none on) and I exited the resource pack area and BOOM my sound started to work
