So, I've been playing Minecraft for a couple months, most of my settings on the high end, averaging between 30 and 40 FPS which is more than enough for me. I've added a texture pack or two and it was fine as well. I've got a GT440 and 2 gigs of ram, Windows 7.
One day, a couple weeks ago, I log onto Minecraft in the town me and my friends have made (LAN network in our flat) and my FPS is between 0 and 5. It continues this way as long as I'm in our little town (~0 FPS, ~0 chunk updates), but the minute I start mining and get below the surface, it seems to be fine and goes back up to ~40 FPS. There are also little spots in our town that seem to be a lot less laggy than others, but if I get near our chickens and cows, I just about freeze up completely. Nobody else has the same problem.
If I start a singleplayer game, my framerate is normal too.
I've reinstalled Java, Minecraft, GFX drivers, tried launching and playing around with Optifine, tried it with and without my texture packs, and none of it makes any difference at all. There doesn't seem to be a difference between "medium" settings and if I put everything to absolute lowest in Optifine.
I understand, but the point is that it used to run perfectly, and then something weird happened. It doesn't matter what my settings are - the framerate in our village is zero to five and in my mine, it's 40+ FPS. It's running over LAN, between two and four people usually.

Is it a LAN world or an actual server using the .exe?

Any ideas?
