Mojang will be dropping support for Java 5 and PowerPC
With the release of Minecraft 1.6, Mojang is planning to drop support for Java 5 and PowerPC, meaning that Minecraft will not work for those with Java 5 or a PowerPC processor. Minecraft 1.6 is planned to come out in the Spring or Summer of 2013.
You can check what version of Java you have here. If you have Java 5, you will need to have Java 6 or Java 7 at the time of Minecraft 1.6's release.
How to update Java:
To update to Java click on the "Agree and Start Download" button on this page.
If you have a 64-bit operating system, it is recommended that you install 64-bit Java. Please keep in mind that if you are using a 32-bit browser, such as chrome, it will download 32-bit Java regardless of whether your operating system is 32-bit or not. The manual downloads can be found here.
To check whether or not you have a PowerPC processor, follow the steps here. If you have a PowerPC processor, then your computer will not be able to run Minecraft when 1.6 is released. If you have a PowerPC processor, Mojang recommends that you do not upgrade to Minecraft 1.6.
I'll add that this mostly affects the PowerMac G5, PowerBook G4, iBook G4, iMac G4, Mac Mini G4 and earlier Apple computers which are all stuck on Java 5. Any Apple computer made after ~2006 likely is able to update to Java 6 or 7. PC's of course are unaffected as long as you are running an OS later than Windows 2000.

Thanks for that extra bit of useful information!

Support is being removed so that a number of important updates can be made, and will, among other things, prevent crashing in certain situations, bolster Linux support, and cause Minecraft to run and render faster. Java 5 is no longer being supported by lwjgl (Lightweight Java Game Library; the code library that allows Java to interact with your computer's graphics card), and PowerPC is no longer being supported by Apple.

PowerMac G5s lag a lot on Minecraft anyways (I know because I have one as a second desktop). So meh. If anything, it'll just give people an excuse to get a new computer. LOL.
LWJGL, the Java graphics engine Minecraft uses, currently doesn't work with Java 7. Newer versions of OSX (mainly Lion and Mountain Lion, I think) don't install Java through Software Update any more. If you want Java, you have to go get it from the official site, and you can only get Java 7 there. So LWJGL is being updated to work with Java 7, and as part of that update, they have to rewrite a whole lot of their code. To make it easier on them and to be able to release faster, they're dropping support for PowerPC Macs and Java 5. Intel Macs and Java 6 have been available in 2006, and as of 2009, neither PowerPC nor Java 5 are officially supported.
Sorry if im late, but OS X does support Java 7, you just have to download it manually.
I know this was said above, im just pointing out its safe and is easy to install. Minecraft and other programs should also run better. Not sure why Apple uses J6
So actually PowerPC support isn't being dropped but it has to do with the lack of Java 6 for Apple PowerPC? Linux users with a PowerPC proc + IBM Java or OpenJDK are still able to run Minecraft?
Well, lwjgl not supporting powerPC would infer either incompatibility with PowerPC on linux, or terrible preformance. lwjgl (to my knowledge) allows minecraft to access the GPU and extra CPU resources, and it wouldn't have access to that anymore if you are still using powerPC.

OSX DOES support Java 7. You just have to download it yourself from the official Java site. Apple stopped offering Java through Software Update.
