I was ready to play minecraft when I came home today but for apparently no reason, I could not connect to minecraft.net an therefore could not play on a server, despite being able to open multiple webpages. I assumed the problem has something to do with mineraft and not the connection and I deleted all the minecraft files from my mac. I went to minecraft.net and downloaded the new zip file and placed it in my application folder but when I tried to play it told me that minecraft was not downloaded. I was not even given the option to play offline. Sure enoughh, when I went to the minecraft folder in my application support folder, it was empty. What happened and how can I fix it because I really want to play Hypixel's new map with my friend. If you could please help me I would really appreciate it. Thank you and happy holidays!

It will not let me log in however. When I navigate to the minecraft folder in my application support folder, it is 100% empty, no files whatsoever.
