There's an issue with minecraft and SCIM/other IME's in linux that a lot of people are hitting that prevents you from using the keyboard in-game in linux. There's a workaround a lot of people suggest, specifically, to disable scim/ibus/whatever, or to set 'XMODIFIERS= ' before launching, but there's a problem with that, too:
It means you can't type in other languages in chat!
Other platforms get to use IME's just fine. How can Linux users get their IME working inside minecraft?
(Helpful definitions for the uninitiated: IME - input method editor. They are required to type some languages, including Chinese or Japanese.)
Update: I've since done a manual update of lwjgl to 2.8.5. While this allows the keyboard to work (i.e. you can move), the IME is still unuseable (i.e. unresponsive, no ability to input other languages in chat, etc)
