I realise there's a lot of threads on fps limiters and whatever, but most are old, and all are unhelpful for my current situation.
Before you say "But Lann094, the human eye can't see above 60 fps, so I'm not going to offer help and instead educate you on this," I respectfully disagree with you and would prefer it if you didn't try to educate me on this.
I was playing Minecraft last night at perfect 120 fps, in windowed mode, and it was magical. This was the first time it had ever happened, as I'd always been capped to 60 fps. However, upon logging in tonight I've noticed that yet again I'm capped at 60 fps.
My question is this: Is anyone aware of a sure-fire way to actually allow Minecraft to reach 120 fps? I have no idea what I did to achieve it last night, but miss it severely.
What I've tried:
Changing the fps limit in options.txt to 120
Forcing programs to run at 120Hz through Nvidia Inspector
My monitor information reports it's running at 120Hz, so that can't be it. And if my GPU forced Vsync at that, it would still reach 120 fps. I don't think having Fraps running in the background would limit framerates, at least it's never done it before.
It's strange though, because tonight it was again running at 120 fps. There seems to be some condition changing things, that I'm unaware of. It doesn't seem to be a common thing though, judging by the attention this thread got.

Thanks for taking a crack at it though, Tedster.
It's not that its uncommon, it's that the client is a little unpredictible right now and it's hard to say whether it's the client or your PC environment or possibly even your connection to the server you're playing on if you play multiplayer. I think you've got most of the common bases covered so whatever your bottle neck may bit it's possibly fairly obscure. You might try updating your lwjgl to see if its some odd sound issue that's causing slowdowns.
As you can see in this forum there are a lot of people here with more serious problems than just some magical fps goal they would like to get. Sorry if that comes across as harsh and I wish you luck on your quest.

A small mod to improve your game, but keeping the vanilla flavour. For Minecraft 1.8.

I was sort of hoping that it would be something that someone knew how to fix, like a setting I overlooked, or a method of launching the game differently.
It seems a good ol' system restart is the best remedy right now, so that'll have to suffice, since I can't really give any more detailed information on what could be causing it.
Hey Lann. A guy in another thread today prodded my memory about a possible cause for your situation. Do you play in a window or fullscreen? If you play in a window, try fullscreen and see if your FPS goes up. If it does but you really want to play in windowed mode you might try turning off the DWM when minecraft launches by right clicking the launcher>properties>compatibility and put a checkmark in 'disable desktop composition' to see if that helps.

I tried it with terrible results. I gave my wife my glasses for a second, a creeper showed up and now my wife is pregnant.
Stupid 3D..

Perhaps one day, you will be able to trade in your potato for an egg plant; I hear they can get some serious performance.
