Well, I've been getting some nasty few-second lag spikes as of late, than returning semi-instantly back up to my 120+ fps. These spikes happen pretty often too.
So I shift-f3'd it up, and whaddya know... The "Sound" chunk of the pie chart shoots up to 40+% during these lagspikes, than eases back down.
Do you have a 64 bit OS? If so, do you have 64bit Java? If you have both 32 & 64 bit Java installed do you know which one minecraft is running on? This is one of the most common causes for odd lag on a decently powerful machine like yours.
If that doesn't help then another possible fix is to update your lwjgl and see if that helps. I recommend version 2.8.3.

I tried it with terrible results. I gave my wife my glasses for a second, a creeper showed up and now my wife is pregnant.
Stupid 3D..
