My minecraft failed to update so now I'm "not in the family" and can only play single player. What should I do?

Try right clicking on the launcher and telling windows to run it as administrator.

Also for some people the downloading packages seems to hang, however several report that if you wait 20 minutes or more it will sometimes finish.

Another possibility is that your firewall or antivirus are blocking. Put exceptions in them for minecraft and java and see if the update works.
