Hello,
I have a decent computer. FX Bulldozer 8 Core, 16GB DDR3 and ATI 6850 HD GPU.
And for the longest time I had Java 32bit installed and played Minecraft and it was always smooth, no lag unless it was server related or had any problems what so ever. And there was always this red writing saying 'Use 64bit for such and such' And I thought, well. My computer is 64bit and it should only enhance my playing if I upgrade to 64bit Java.
So after I removed 32bit and installed 64bit. Everything seems to be perfect until I get near lava or water. Most commonly with lava. Then I have a massive spike, like lag. My FPS drops super low for about 3/4 seconds and then it picks it back up with no issue and acts like nothing ever happened. But if I go away until it disappears and come back I get the same inital lag. This is in single player mode and server.
So I removed 64bit and installed 32bit and ran around to check to see if I always had that problem and it was smooth. Not a single hiccup. So once again I removed 32bit and installed 64bit and have the same problem.
I tried using this command to increase my memory and it made things run a lot more smoother and a lot quicker at loading things. But I still get the problem with lava. The lava that I'm using to check it on is normally about 15 blocks long and 15 blocks high. If this helps any.
My GPU drivers are completely updated also.
Any help would be appreciated!
Are you running an HD texture pack perhaps? The only lag I run into are little moments in the nether as new chunks generate.
Out of curiosity do you have Advanced OpenGL on in the minecraft video settings? I've never bothered with that setting since it was added even though my system should be able to handle it and it's specs are lower than yours.
Thanks for replying, Rodabon!
I'm not using any HD texture packs, I prefer the original artwork. I don't believe it's on. [ Just checked, it's set off. ]
The settngs I have at the moment are
Graphics: Fancy
Render Distance: Far
Smooth Lighting: On
Performance: Balanced
3D Anaglyph: Off
View Bobbing: On
GUI Scale: Auto
Advanced Open GL: Off
Brightness: Moody
Clouds: On
Particles: All
Server Textures: On
Fullscreen: Off
Use Vsync: Off
Those are the settings I'm currently using. But I would of thought that running these are fine.
I'm stumped. The only other thought I have is to make sure your catalyst control center 3D graphics settings are set to 'use application settings'. I've heard of other people complaining about lava and redstone causing lag, but I've never had any issues. I run an Nvidia card, otherwise you have a hotter processor and more ram than me. What OS are you running?
[edit]
I ran a search and found a thread indicating that it actually could be the sound of lava causing this. You might try updating your lwjgl to see if that helps. Get version 2.8.4 off the home page list instead of the latest version 2.8.5 which reportedly has some issues.
The version 2.8.4 caused a black screen which is supposed to be a common problem with 64bit users.
"Note: On MOST 64 bit computers, the lwjgl64.dll update will cause a black screen crash (as of stable release 2.8.1)."
So I'm going to install 2.8.1 or 2.8.0 See if that helps. My Catalyst Control 3D settings are set to 'use application settings'. Hopefully this lwjgl will help. If not I might just have to use 32bit to stop it all together.
I'll keep you posted on how it goes!

I tried it with terrible results. I gave my wife my glasses for a second, a creeper showed up and now my wife is pregnant.
Stupid 3D..

Whoops, I'm a version behind on my memory then.
Good luck!
