I just redownloaded minecraft for the first time in at least a year, and I'm having some problems. I have a much nicer PC than I had before so I'm not sure why I'd have graphic issues now, but when I load, I can see through most of the world until I get close enough, then the ground will load. Before I get close enough however, I can see all the way to the bedrock, the tunnels and monsters etc, in every direction. It's kind of annoying to play like this.
The second problem I'm having is every time I start a new world I'm spawning inside of a block and have to punch my way out. This one is minor, but still annoying. Any advice?
Both the issues you describe are problems with the current minecraft build. Minecraft recently launched an official bug reporting site which you can find here: https://mojang.atlassian.net/browse/MC
As for the terrain not rendering in the distance, this is an issue that has been present since 1.3 when they got rid of the old single player client and essentially made single player run on the multiplayer client with your computer running a local server in the background. I think this bug report probably best represents that issue: https://mojang.atlassian.net/browse/MC-129
The Mojang team are currently reworking a lot of the game engines including the rendering engine, so hopefully future versions will see some improvement in performance.

I recommend updating both, then post the results of how the game runs afterward (quote my post to get a quicker response).
GFX drivers are current and I just reinstalled java to see if that would help - no go so far.

I tried it with terrible results. I gave my wife my glasses for a second, a creeper showed up and now my wife is pregnant.
Stupid 3D..
