I recently got a HP Envy 15-3040nr and every time I open up with the High Performance GPU (The Radeon 7690M GPU as apposed to the on board Intel GPU) Minecraft runs for a few seconds and crashes.
Specs
Intel i7-2670QM 2.2GHz
8GB DDR3 RAM
AMD Radeon HD 7690M GPU
Crucial M4 128GB SSD
Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit
When I run in the Power saving mode (On board Intel GPU) Minecraft runs but it runs at about 20-40fps with some video settings turned down. When I switch to the Radeon GPU I can get 60+ FPS with the video settings turned up but only for about a minute then the game freezes up, my screen goes black for a second and I get a message that says "Display driver has crashed but recovered". Some people have suggested that it may be that the GPU is overheating and disabling itself but Minecraft only gets to about 57°C before it crashes and I have gotten the GPU up to 70°C+ while playing other games and it has worked fine. I think it may have something to do with the drivers as it says the driver crashed but I'm currently using the most recent version of the 7690M drivers so I don't know what to do. Does anyone think they can help?
Did you get the AMD Radeon drivers from the AMD site?
I just tried installing the latest driver from the AMD website and got this error even though it was the correct driver for the 7690M. I'm currently downloading the driver for this computer that's on the HP website and i'll install that.
Ok, I completely wiped my computer of any trace of the old AMD drivers and reinstalled the driver on the HP website and I'm still getting the same problem.
Then I think you need to wait for HP to update the drivers you can use from their site.
The 7000 series of radeons are still fairly new, laptop manufacturers that use branded drivers can be slow at updating the drivers they distribute.
If they (HP) have a customer support number you may want to contact them and say you are having trouble with an OpenGL application using the drivers they provide.
