I'd like to point out first off that this problem has been happening since about 3 updates into Beta. Yes, Minecraft worked during Alpha. Probably wasn't much tension on the game back then.
So, I'm posting here. Again. My last thread from march-ish never got any useful answers other than 'not enough RAM' which wasn't the case. Someone with less RAM than me is able to run Minecraft perfectly fine.
Simply enough, my computer just gets these random crashes and freezes when playing Minecraft. Yes, computer. My whole computer goes into a 'can't do ' mode, along with Minecraft, of course. When I opened up Minecraft and looked at the javaw.exe, it turns out that even on low priority, it takes up about 400K memory of my computer. From what I know, it's infamous for doing this, but that's just ridiculous. Anywho...Usually I can last about 20 minutes without Minecraft crashing and if I don't clean up my computer, it persists even if I restart said computer. This makes me believe it is indeed RAM and/or memory, but not that I don't have enough. I have 4 GB of ram, so I believe that is indeed enough. I would like some helpful answers detailing this format:
What can I do to improve the situation?
What is the problem and what causes it?
...And that's about it. Those two questions. Another thing to add is that it only happens when I'm in an actual world, so that once again makes me believe it's just Minecraft chomping away at my ram.

Maybe try putting it on high priority. It should allow Minecraft to access a larger amount of memory on your computer.
Also, you said on Alpha it workd fine, but on Beta it messed up.
Maybe that's because (no offense) you're running on Windows Vista, which is pretty outdated. In fact, I'm running on Windows 8.
Try upgrading to Windows 7/8.
Might be because I'm on Vista, yes. Vista is, from what I've heard, not very compatible with just about anything.
- I have tried putting in on High priority. Javaw.exe was using about...700K MB of memory. Still happened.
- As for the not enough RAM...someone who has less RAM than me runs it fine. I have about 4GB of ram.
- I have also tried several ways to allocate RAM, yet none have worked so far.
Firstly, any suggestions about it being your RAM or Windows Vista are ridiculous. I've run Minecraft on a Vista PC with 1GB before and it had no lag (It's one of my test computers, so it gets a fresh install every month or so, though I'm using vmWare more nowadays). As for not being able to allocate more RAM, which methods have you tried? Now the information provided isn't exactly great, but to me it sounds like a Java problem. Have you tried uninstalling all Java versions and manually downloading Java? Usually something like this is caused by a 32-bit installation of Java on a 64-bit operating system. And although the information in the OP doesn't indicate the bit, I presume it is 64-bit due to your amount of RAM. Hopefully we can sort this out for you soon!

Eh...it's 32-bit. I'll edit that in. I haven't tried uninstalling all java versions then manually downloading, but I have seen similar problems with this solution. I'll try that now. As for allocating the RAM, there's that .bat file you can create which limits your RAM for java to a certain amount. There was another method I had tried, but I can't remember it.
An update is due : I removed all of my Java(turns out I had 6-something as well) and I started up Minecraft. Went pretty good, but then I created a new world, and haha - I guess I could have expected it. Unplayable lag on anything higher than Fast and Tiny graphics settings. So, I guess a new problem has arisen.

The Java Control Panel Method? You could try running Minecraft off of a RAMdisk. I believe that the problem isn't entirely gone. Playing in fullscreen for a while will work too. Here is an excellent thread by IronWaffle that should help you further. Glad I could help and happy mining!
