Crafting Broken?

So I was going to craft some sticks in my inventory crafting grid, but nothing happened when I stacked two pieces of wood on top of each other. The same thing happened when I put it into my crafting table. I tried other things, such as doors and slabs, but still nothing. At the time I was playing on a modded 1.4.2 client (TMI, SPC, Optifine), so I upgraded to 1.4.5(unmodded). Even then, nothing happened when I tried to craft anything. Here's a screenshotof my crafting table.

OK Guys, I made an honest mistake in the 1.4.5 picture, but in 1.4.2 the crafting was actually broken. Sorry for the inconvienience.
