With 1.4 and the new minecart sound, I was experiencing problems with the minecart sound. Under the early release, the sound simply would not stop after exiting the minecart.
Under 1.4.5 it seems to have worsened. Now when in a moving cart, the audio stutters badly, AND the minecart itself twitches like mad. Going over long distances results in lag, freezeups all that. After a while the sound resolves, but the visible stutter and lag remains.
Nope... sound stutter is back, even after the OpenAL fix. Seems to make the noise problems better, but doesn't eliminate it entirely.
I'm currently busy working on a few solutions. For now, what do you run in the background when playing Minecraft? Could you keep Minecraft windowed and have Task Manager's Performance tab open next to you and tell me what happens to the percentages when you ride a mine cart? Pay specific attention to Disk, but Memory and CPU is also important. I will update this post as I work on some solutions.
EDIT 1: Could you go to Device Manager and under Sound, video and game controllers right click on anything sounds related (I have High Definition Audio Device and IntelĀ® Display Audio) and select Disable? Then test it and let me know what happens. I'm trying to pin point the problem and so far it looks like Audio Drivers. (Didn't work for me, awaiting your response)
EDIT 2: Have you tried updating your audio drivers? You can do it in Device Manager as well, but what I have noticed is that it's pretty pathetic at detecting updates, so rather find the latest drivers manually. I'm busy installing mine now, will report back soon. (Didn't work either).
I think it is safe to assume that this is a bug in Minecraft, rather than in your configuration. I will be submitting a bug report.
I'm currently busy working on a few solutions. For now, what do you run in the background when playing Minecraft?
I'll do that shortly. I can tell you that it occurs 100% of the time, no matter what is running.
It appears to be related not to the audio files itself, but MC's sound effects related to shifting the tone of the two minecart sound files relative to speed. For example, when starting off at slow speed, the stutter is very bad. As I pass a few powered tracks or go down a large hill, the cart gains speed and the sound shifts (I am not sure if the pitch is changing or if it's just getting louder.) Then the sound problem clears up. The visible stutter of the cart remains no matter what, though.
Seeing as how it's also a visible stutter, it's not likely to be related to audio drivers.
My thinking is the coders were playing with changes in pitch relative to the cart's speed, and that's where the problem lies. The two OGG minecart files are fine as they are, it's when the game tries to play around with the pitch that it seems to cause problems.
MC 1.3 had already introduced other minecraft problems (dismounting jumps you a few blocks sideways, so if you dismount on an elevated track, you fall) and "pushing" a cart to get it started now acts strange.
It seems the coders are generally struggling with the carts.

OK did that. No noticeable spikes anywhere when the audio problem kicks in, or when it disappears. I monitored CPU, RAM and disk usage, keeping an eye on pagefile. Nothing. Slow increase in pagefile as I played, but no spikes relative to the sound issue.
I tried running MC at different RAM allocations, too, to test it. I ran it with 3 GB allocated, and with only 500mb allocated. No difference.

No effect. Disabling HD Audio Device shuts off all sound. Just disabling Intel Display audio had no effect.

This is a relatively new install. Audio drivers should be up to date, but I am checking.

I think I am noticing my minecraft do the same thing, and whats even worse is when I am TNT mining. I will go mine some blocks and they will rollback as if I was having lagg on a minecraft server.. Which should NOT be happening on a singleplayer world.
But yes my world is starting to stutter. Do you have alot of complicated buildings, cave systems?
My world save is about 100mb large, and my home is a mass of caves I have been digging in.
I do notice some strange stutter/fps drops though. I get 350 fps if I turn the render distance to tiny, but the stutter still persists.
Blegh.
Edit: If you don't know what I mean. Sometimes minecraft pulls the whole ".exe has stopped working" joke on me for 2 seconds.
I have a large world with a very complex rail system. So I tested: I created a brand new world, and laid down a short span of rail. Problem still occurs.
I am trying to take video of it, but can't get a good quality vid yet.
The visible stutter (minecart shaking like mad) occurs 100% of the time. It is visible in any view mode (1st or 3rd person.)
Lots of other reports of this problem, but Mojang is deleting them as duplicates of a bug which isn't really addressing the problem. As a result, I don't think we can expect much movement on this. Dummies.
Here's the "main" bug report if you want to add your weight to it:
Well, it is listed as resolved in a future 1.5 release, so let's wait it out and hope it truly is resolved. If you still want to make a video of this bug, then just ask me and I'll do it for you.

I didn't see the resolution notice. I guess that's good, but it's still unclear when 1.5 is coming out (January?) -- sucks because so much of my world is rail-based. But I can wait.
Thanks for the offer on the video, but I guess we won't be needing it.
I'd like to try the Open AL fix but the link provided above in BigGrayGolem's post appears to lead to a broken site. I'm incredibly frustrated by this because my world now stutters around some trees and my "house" consistently. I literally can create the stutter (audio and video lag) EVERY time I walk in those specific places. I'm impatient and would like to try the DLL before 1.5 comes out - does anyone have a working link?
If not, I'll just mutter every stinking time I walk to my "house". (Grr.)
Edit -
The issue is most definitely related to sound in my case. I had both a herd of cattle and chicken coop near my house and the woods in question. Killing all the chickens resolved the issue. Re-introducing new chickens caused the issue to come back. More chickens -> more sounds -> worse stutter. If I keep the chickens to about 3, the stutter only lasts about 0.5 to 1 second whereas 5-6 chickens causes 2-3 seconds of stutter.

The link above goes to another discussion on this very site (Minecraftforum.net), which is (obviously) still working. I also tested the link to the OpenAL downloads, and that's still live, too.

Apologies, I had meant the link in the post you linked to was broken. It was for several days. Now, fortunately, it is back up. Thanks for letting me know!

Your issue is not the same as the minecart issues this thread is about. Regarding your example of the chickens. Did you keep them in water to push the eggs to a collection point? It has been found that the actual cause of slight lag in that situation is the water splashing sound unloading as you move away.

Again, my apologies - when I originally posted the issue I didn't realize it was the chickens but thought perhaps it was a sound issue of some sort. Granted it wasn't due to minecarts but I saw the theory that it might be sound related. I'll read more carefully next time as I see that BigGrayGolem saw no relief when attempting to use the fix.
And, yes, how did you guess I was harvesting eggs by keeping chickens in water? So, by that logic, if I were to place the whole shebang in a ramdisk I might mitigate the issue? I sure hope it isn't an issue forever. The issue I linked to in my first post seems to indicate the water sound issue might extend to rain as well (perhaps for the same reason).
I'll tip my hat to all of you and step out of the thread now. If the admins wish, my comments could be purged as they are off topic - sorry for the trouble but thanks for the help.

Any ideas?
Only running Optifine, and occasionally TMI.
Also, it seems your problem is only with minecarts, and that is a problem that everyone has with the game. Just wait for 1.5.
Are you saying others are having minecart issues with 1.4? I did a search and didn't see any posts on it.
If that's the case, then yes, I can surely wait.

This doesn't fix the visible shudder in the minecart itself, or the lag over long distances, though.

I tried it with terrible results. I gave my wife my glasses for a second, a creeper showed up and now my wife is pregnant.
