Me and my friend are trying to start a LAN server, but nothing shows up in the server menu. I think the problem is that I am connected to my modem via an Ethernet cable, while he is connected wirelessly. If anyone has any solutions you will get a million diamonds.
It has nothing to do with how you are connected.
Silly question, but did anyone of you do the "Open LAN" thing in the options? That has to be on to start the hosting. Then you can just search for LAN games and what not.
Or you can find out what the localhost IP is, usually the local IP of the machine that is hosting (192.168.x.x), then add the port (which is shown when a LAN game is opened) with a colon behind the IP.

Of course we did open to LAN! But anyway, we fixed it, it was the error where it doesnt bind Minecraft to a port.
