Hello everyone. Minecraft has (somewhat recently) begun randomly freezing up my computer, as I'm playing it. Sometimes I can play for hours without problem, sometimes it's only minutes before it happens. When this happens, I sometimes hear a faint static noise come from my headphones, and then my whole computer stops responding. I have to restart the computer using the reset button on my tower. This did not used to happen at all, and I was able to play, never having to worry about that impending freeze.
Any thoughts why this is happening?
My computer averages around 40-50 FPS on highest settings, and no stutters or slowdown occur at all.
I can also play other, more graphic intensive games such as StarCraft II on near-ultra settings at 30FPS or higher, with no problems at all.
Specs:
AMD Athlon 64 3200+ @ 2.10 GHz
NVIDIA GeForce 6600
2GB of RAM
Windows 7 home premium (64-Bit)
Ubuntu (I dual boot) (64-bit)
Also 64-bit java
Any help would be wonderful. (I've tried allocating different amounts of memory, too)
Try turning on Vsync, if you don't have it on already, and see if that makes any noticeable difference.
Also, what amounts of memory did you try to allocate? Is it your PC or just Java crashing? You can't use Ctl+alt+Del to open the task manager? You don't get a crash report?
Check all your cooling fans to make sure they are working to make sure its not a heating issue. Minecrafts latest builds are more CPU intense and just overall a little more resource intense.

Nope, can't use Ctrl+alt+del, or anything. My case has very good airflow. Although, I may have fixed this issue. I downgraded my GPU driver. It seems to have helped. A lot.

I tried it with terrible results. I gave my wife my glasses for a second, a creeper showed up and now my wife is pregnant.
Stupid 3D..
