Try deleting your entire .minecraft folder
in the Start menu search %appdata% and click Roaming then delete the folder labeled .minecraft then restart minecraft and login.
Correction to the above comment. It's under your system Library folder, which is sometimes not visible. Inside of that, go to your Application Support folder, then you'll see Minecraft. If your Library folder isn't displayed, then a quick Google of "How to make the library folder visible on Mac" should do the trick
Hmm... I'm running into the same issue. I tried loading a mod with the Minecraft Mod Installer and then after I did that I keep on getting stuck on the Mojang screen after I log in. Then I tried uninstalling the mod, still the same. Then I used Time Machine to revert to a version of the minecraft folder in my Library to a point prior to trying to install the Mod ...still the same, stuck on Mojang screen. Then I tried removing the minecraft folder in the Library and force updating..... still getting stuck on Mojang screen. (I tried a couple of restarts throughout this process too. Any ideas what might be wrong?
I am on 1.4.5.

Retired StaffOptions > Force Update. Then run.
Delete any texture packs you have as well.
in the Start menu search %appdata% and click Roaming then delete the folder labeled .minecraft then restart minecraft and login.
...but doesn't force download do the same thing?
I saw the following on the LWJGL page...
As a last resort, you can use the Minecraft Launcher's Force Download option to reset the files.

Retired StaffForce updating resets it to version 2.4.2
The latest version is 2.8.5, though 2.8.4 is the more stable one.
