When I close Minecraft normally, or when it freezes and I have to shut Minecraft down through task manager, the process "javaw.exe," that was running Minecraft continues to run even though the Minecraft window is now closed. It continues to use up my computer's resources. This happens everytime I close Minecraft.
If I close out Minecraft, then open Minecraft again, it will begin a brand new "javaw.exe" process, even though the last "javaw.exe" is still running. Basically, a new javaw.exe process will be started each time Minecraft opens and will not stop running. I could potentially have an unlimited amount of "javaw.exe's" running at once.
I am also not able to kill these process thorough task manager even though I am the system administrator. The only way to stop these multiple "javaw.exe" processes is to re-boot my computer. I also do not experience this problem with any other programs that run "javaw.exe."
My System:
I'm running vanilla Minecraft. I already tried completely removing Java from my computer and re-installing a fresh Java. My virus and malware protection is up to date and I have run several full-system scans that all came back clean.
OS - Windows 7 Home Premium
Version - 6.1.7601 Service Pack 1 Build 7601

Don't let java use that much ram for one thing.
Also try updating java.
Hope this help
Thanks for trying to help! but, that's won't sove the problem.
Java is updated and Java is using the appropriate amount of RAM for the javaw.exe. The problem is that MC is loading multiple versions of the same process and will not kill the process after the MC client is closed. If I limited the amount of RAM allocated, it would just eventually prevent me from opening MC.
sane thing happening to me! i start minecraft and i dont even log in and my antivirus suddenly pops up and says MALWARE BLOCKED then has javaw.exe and then a site ive never even been too!
i can play mc but i cant stop this from happening! i even reinstalled minecraft and it still wont stop! idk my specs but i guess ima get a new ing comp for my b-day in goddamn april!
I got it fixed! i had to delete javaw.exe a load of times and then it worked.
I have the same problem. Every time I exit Minecraft (or it crashes) and I go to task manager, the Javaw.exe process remains there. Minecraft also crashes after I leave a multiplayer server and refresh to join another one. After countless attempts to continue playing minecraft, the Javaw.exe processes build up, until my memory is maxed at 100%. The Javaw.exe processes cannot be ended in the task manager and/or another other way possible (believe me I have tried everything). I have done some research and people are complaining that an anti-virus software called K9 Blue Coat Web Protection is causing the problem. A few of the websites I have stumbled upon have the same occurrence and they all state that they have this software. The only option is to uninstall it. But, because some parents use this software to prevent their children from accessing certain websites, it can be unfix-able for those children (which includes me D:). Mojang must do something to prevent this. I'm not certain, but the new launcher (for 1.6.1 and the snapshots) may fix this problem. It fixing the crashing but I don't think it fixes the javaw.exe.
GOOD NEWS! I just tested it, with the new launcher, it opens to files that require the javaw.exe process. One is the code/ launcher and the other one is the game itself. When I closed the files the Javaw.exe process deleted! I believe that Mojang have fixed it or somehow a mistake caused this to happen THANK GOODNESS! If you want this new launcher and the 1.6.1 pre release just type on google.
Minecraft 1.6.1 pre release mojang --- This should be close to the first link (look for www.mojang. etc etc)
Its just a bug with the new launcher, because the launcher, even though it says it closes, it still stays open, and is hidden. I hope they manage to fix this bug with the launcher.
Yeah, I've had serious lag because of the extra process running, though I'm lucky to be able to close them.

I had this same problem. I had K9 web protection installed. I found elsewhere that this was causing the problem. Once I uninstalled it, the problem seemed to solve itself.
Hope this helps!

Yeah, it quite annoying isn't it?
The only thing I can see that we have in common is Windows 7. What graphics card are you using?
