Same thing happened to me trying to update to 1.4.5. I click update and this is what it gives me: Fatal Error occurred (4): null. I am running on Windows 8 and past updates worked fine like 1.4.1, 1.4.2, and 1.4.4. I have modded it before, but I deleted all the mod files and it still didn't work, and I also tried deleting the jar and version files, but it still didn't work. I think that Magic Launcher 1.0.0 might be affecting it
When I start up Minecraft (Haven't played from 1.3 because of this error) it asks me if i want to update. If I press yes it gives me this error.

Then do a complete fresh install by renaming your .minecraft folder to something else like .minecraft_old, then go to minecraft.net and download a fresh copy of the launcher because your launcher may be outdated, then use it to launch and initiate a redownload.
If that doesn't work then you know it's not the minecraft client. So I would start looking at Windows permissions, networking environment, firewalls, antivirus....things that could be blocking the download.
If it does work, then either mods or a bad install were to blame.

Stupid 3D..
