So, I'm seriously annoyed. I don't usually ask for help, because I can usually figure things out by myself, but it has finally come to this. =P
The thing is, I had Minecraft and all was good. I installed it on Windows XP first, and I didn't have sound, at all. But then I got Windows 7 Professional soon after, and there, it was fine. But THEN, my motherboard died on me. This was just before Minecraft 1.3 came (26 July or somewhere there).
After saving my pennies and buying a new computer 4 months later, I get all happy, reinstall Minecraft and update it to 1.4.4, only to NOT HAVE ANY SOUND EFFECTS, at all. Both in 7 and XP.
I've tried everything. I've checked my speakers, checked the Minecraft tab under the "Mixer", updated my sound drivers, checked the "resources" folder and replaced it with a fresh one, did the whole deleting and replacing of the OpenAL.dll file thingy (my system is 32-bit, with the latest 32-bit Java installed). And that stupid F3+S thing just makes the info pop up and me step backward. I also updated the lwgwl (or whatever it is) thingy, all to no avail!
So please, I implore thee, o Minecraft gods, give me back my sound, because playing in silence is becoming intolerable.
Oh, something worth mentioning: I have both the sound effects and music setting on 100%, and sometimes, some music kicks in. The sound effects NEVER work though. No animals, no knee-crunching sounds, no water/lava... nothing.
Any suggestions? Thanks guys.
PS The only mod I have is Optifine, although before, I used McPatcher for my texture packs and had the same problem. (I installed optifine in the hopes that it would fix the sound problem).
I'm not sure why, but I was under the impression that the sound resources download later once the client starts up. Sometimes your antivirus or firewall can block these resources from being downloaded (AVG is notorious for this).
You might also try holding down F3 then press the 'S' key which reloads resources. But on a new install seems doubtful that is your problem.

Correct. It does take some time if your internet is being derpy. I'm sure reloading resources will force a redownload, IIRC.
Thanks for that, guys. The update wouldn't work, I don't understand why, BUT, I've fixed it anyway!!
What I did was, I went to isohunt and searched for "minecraft 1.4.4" ... From the torrents there, I chose one and copied the resources and bin folder from it, and used them to replace my ones. Then, boom, sounds! =) I hope this post helps someone.

I tried it with terrible results. I gave my wife my glasses for a second, a creeper showed up and now my wife is pregnant.
Stupid 3D..
