Whenever I use the standard bash file to try and launch the minecraft.jar, the terminal always instantly closes and nothing happens - I use this:

java -cp -Xmx2048M -Xms1024M minecraft.jar net.minecraft.LauncherFrame

which is something I found from another support thread - whatever I do, though, minecraft.jar NEVER opens.

Tell me if you need any more details, I'm really desperate to get this fixed :<

Install latest java. I have java 7 from the Software Center I think. If not just search java download and go to their site and download it. With your minecraft.jar file, right click it, open with... OpenJDK Java 7 runtime.

try java -Xmx1024M -Xms1024M -jar minecraft.jar and check in the properties if it is allowed to execute as a program.

put the minecraft.jar in the home folder then try the command
